PēterisUpītis observed that a lilac garden is in bloom for approximately 72 days – the span of time from the earliest to the last lilac blossom. PēterisUpītis's lilac cultivar 'EsībasPrieks' is the earliest of all the lilac cultivars to blossom, and displays a vitality and sense of joy about the spring. Herz Frank, the director and screenwriter of a documentary about PēterisUpītis, which was filmed in 1974 at Riga Film Studio, also chose "EsībasPrieks" as the title of his movie.
