After graduating from Priekuļi Agricultural School, Pēteris Upītis studied on his own in several European countries, including France, which he visited before World War II to learn about wineries and horticulture. From then on, he was fascinated by French art, music, and literature, including the works of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's poetic story "The Little Prince", the name of the lilac variety 'The Little Prince' was created. This work by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry appealed to the breeder P. Upītis so much that in his letter (February 22, 1970) to his brother's wife Alvīne Upītis, he quoted chapter 22 of the book.

'Little Prince', registered with the VAAD in 2004. Flower buds greenish-white. Flowers white, simple, large, aromatic. Inflorescences large, consisting of 1-2 pairs of stiff, moderately dense bracts.
