Today, June 29, we honor the great breeder Pēteris Upītis on his name day. Pēteris was a man who devoted his entire active life as a seeker to the beauty of life and the discovery of the wealth of nature. Energetic, endowed with broad ambitions and relentless work ethic, such Pēteris Upītis has remained in the memories of his contemporaries.

On St. Peter's Day, we are publishing lines of poetry written by poet and cultural worker Gunārs Krieviņš in 1971 - a dedication to Pēteris Upītis:

Little suns

Those little suns that the dwarves and giants could not bring,
they were lit by Man on every root begging for fertility.
He searched where hundreds, seeing the fear of emptiness, passed by,
afraid of losing the light of my defiance.
He entered life with work harnessed to the fangs of wisdom,
felt the warmth of those suns hidden in the earth by the harshness of hardship,
and, having found one, like a trumpeter, he summoned the sisters of fertility to clothe all
in pink, white, and yellow colors.
I want little suns, raised on an apple tree branch, in a lilac flower,
Above the thorns of roses, under the blue skies of our homeland, to sing:
- May the expanse that reflects work, life, and words with strong hands grow larger,
for sleepless nights and the heart of a young man – the name of Man.
