According to the observations of breeder Pēteris Upītis himself, a lilac garden blooms for about 72 days – that is how long it takes from the earliest to the latest lilac flower.

Pēteris Upītis' lilac variety 'Esības Prieks' blooms the earliest and reflects the joy of spring and vitality. The same title also goes to the documentary film about Pēteris Upītis, shot in Riga Film Studio in 1974 by director and screenwriter Herz Frank.
