Purple lilac – a tribute to the giant of the Vidzeme Highlands.
After living in Vidzeme, Pēteris Upītis moved to Zemgale, where the land is particularly fertile and suitable for fruit growing. In 1957, he began planting his own garden in the fertile soil of the Dobele area with new, self-created varieties. The garden grew, expanded and soon acquired the popular name “Upīša dārzs”.
Including lilacs, Pēteris Upītis worked with twenty-four different garden crops: apple trees, pears, plums, cherries, apricots, walnuts, hazelnuts, quinces, raspberries, strawberries, roses, lilies, etc. 'Zemgaliete' is a tribute to every gardener's treasure – fertile land.
