On May 19 at 11:00 a.m., a large-format exhibition “Dobele 1973” will be opened in the garden of the Horticultural Institute , dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the notable Latvian breeder and horticultural scientist Pēteris Upītis .

The exhibition will feature photographs taken in Dobele by photographer Alvis Upītis in 1973, which reveal not only Pēteris Upītis' work and garden, but also everyday life in Soviet Latvia. The photographer himself will also participate in the opening of the exhibition.

In 1973, working with National Geographic, Alvis Upītis arrived in Soviet Latvia to document life behind the Iron Curtain. With the support of Pēteris Upītis, he secretly managed to get to Dobele, where he captured unique shots of the breeder’s work, the garden, and everyday life of the era. The photographs reflect both the horticultural environment and the realities and limitations of the time.

Today, these images have become important documentary evidence of the history of Latvian horticulture and the personality who formed the foundations of Latvian horticultural science.
