Exhibition "Poppies"

Izstade Magones

Image author: From the DI archive

For several years now, the visitors of the Pēteris Upītis Horticultural Museum have been delighted by exhibitions prepared by the museum “Riga Art Nouveau Centre” (RJM) , dedicated to the theme of flowers. The landscape of Zemgale, especially the Dobele region, is characterized by blooming poppy meadows. This year, everyone has the opportunity to get to know the magnificent and diverse nature depicted in the works of applied art of the Art Nouveau period.

The image of the poppy, with its delicate, curved forms, slender stem, and expressive flower, represents the visual identity of Art Nouveau in applied art objects of the Art Nouveau period. Its provocative flower and flirtatious buds adorn everyday tableware, exquisite glassware, and are featured in delicate embroidery and postcards.
At the center of the exhibition are items from the collection of the Riga Municipal Association of Cultural Institutions Museum "Riga Art Nouveau Center", which are perfectly complemented by several items from a private collection (private), because the curved lines of the poppy were of interest not only to artists of the Art Nouveau period.

The diverse range of applied art objects in the exhibition is enriched by the catalog “Poppies” (in Latvian and English) prepared by the museum “Riga Art Nouveau Centre” and the surrounding environment with the landscape of Pēteris Upītis’ garden.

The exhibition at the Pēteris Upītis Horticultural Museum will be on display from May 2 to December 22 of this year.
