In honor of the centenary of the Saeima, a new lilac variety 'Brīve' was bred, and on Thursday, September 8, these lilacs were planted in a ceremonial ceremony at Independence Square near Jēkaba Street, Riga.

The ceremony was opened and the centenary lilacs were planted by the Speaker of the Saeima, Ināra Mūrniece, and the President of the May 4 Declaration Club, Velta Čebotarenoka. The event was also attended by members of the Saeima Presidium, deputies, winners of the youth photo contest “Guarding the Most Precious,” whose exhibition of works was opened in the parliament after the ceremony, as well as members of the photo contest jury.

The lilac variety 'Brīve', dedicated to the centenary of the Saeima, was bred at the Institute of Horticulture, and was bred by the institute's leading researcher, Sarmīte Strautiņa.

The Saeima centenary lilacs 'Brīve' symbolically convey our commitment to the highest values of our country – freedom, independence and democracy. A stylized lilac flower, surrounded by the amphitheater-shaped layout of the parliament, is also included in the Saeima centenary logo.

The 1st Saeima convened for its first session on November 7, 1922, and with the convening of the parliament, the Constitution of Latvia also came into force.
